The Louisville Cardinals have emerged as the standout winners in men’s college basketball’s transfer portal, setting themselves up as potential powerhouses for the upcoming 2026-2027 season.
Florrie Vidunga, undeniably the top player in the transfer portal, has opted for Louisville over other big programs like Duke, Michigan, and St. John’s. He’s also declared for the 2026 NBA Draft, which raises some speculation—there’s a chance he may not even step on campus. Still, it seems likely he’ll choose to join the Cardinals. The athletic 6’10 forward had an impressive sophomore year at the University of Kansas, gaining recognition as one of the best rim protectors and a dominant force on the offensive glass. With potential first-round pick status in the NBA Draft, arriving at Louisville could offer him much more than just a spot in the draft lineup.
Additionally, Louisville secured former Oregon point guard Jackson Kjelstad. Although Kjelstad’s last season was marred by a hand injury that limited him to just 12 games, during his sophomore year—before the injury—he showed flashes of being an exceptional lead guard, hitting 38 percent of his three-pointers. He seems to be poised for a significant comeback and has reportedly applied for a medical redshirt, potentially giving him two extra years of eligibility.
According to ESPN, the partnership of Vidunga and Kjelstad appears to be a strategic bundled deal. Last season, the Cardinals also benefited from the transfer portal but struggled in the NCAA Tournament due to star freshman point guard Mikel Brown Jr. dealing with a back injury. Nonetheless, Louisville is set to return Adrian Woolley, who could have a breakout season ahead.
Head coach Pat Kelce has truly excelled in utilizing the transfer portal. With Duke lacking a superstar like Cooper Flagg or Cameron Boozer, and North Carolina undergoing a rebuild with new coach Mike Malone, unless Vidunga decides to go pro, Louisville may very well enter the season as the frontrunner in the ACC.
