Loyola University Chicago Offers Abortion Services in Health Plans
Loyola University Chicago’s student health plans have included provisions for “abortion care services” for the past four years. This is notable given the university’s Jesuit Catholic identity. Despite its religious background, Loyola provides these services along with prenatal and postnatal care to its students.
The UnitedHealthcare Student Health Insurance Plan Certificate of Coverage prominently displays the university’s logo alongside the Jesuit motto, “Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam,” which translates to “for the greater glory of God.” It explicitly states that benefits also encompass “abortion care services.”
The plan mentions that coverage includes “voluntary sterilization” as well. Additionally, it details various contraceptive services and methods, asserting that these will be covered in a manner similar to other medical conditions. This includes FDA-approved contraceptives, devices, educational services, and follow-up care.
Historically, the Catholic Church has maintained a strong stance against abortion, recently reaffirmed by Pope Leo XIV in remarks to diplomats. He stated, “Life is a gift to be cherished and the family as its responsible guardian…we categorically reject any practices that deny or exploit the origin of life.” He also expressed concern over efforts to fund cross-border access to “safe abortion.”
The situation raises questions about the alignment of institutional values with the services provided, particularly in a religious context. Observers have noted a growing acceptance of abortion and support for organizations like Planned Parenthood among Christian colleges.
