LSU Finalizes Roster as SEC Lawsuit Develops

As the SEC prepares to request a temporary restraining order from a federal judge in Alabama, LSU has completed its team roster for the upcoming season.

After several court sessions involving athletes from Louisiana, including former Ole Miss players Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris, the Tigers have opted not to add either player to their squad this season.

On Tuesday night, LSU head coach Lane Kiffin confirmed the roster, which now includes Gabriel Reliford and Aidan Anding, reaching the maximum limit of 105 players.

SEC Claims LSU’s Management is Lax Amid Potential Expulsion Vote

This decision follows the amendment of complaints by Wright and Harris, who included the SEC as a defendant in their case.

A judge granted an injunction to the players last week after a lengthy hearing, during which SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey testified to a packed courtroom in Baton Rouge.

SEC Initiates Own Lawsuit Against LSU

Just minutes into his testimony, news broke in the courtroom about the SEC’s own lawsuit against LSU, Kiffin, Athletic Director Verge Ausberry, and other athletic department officials.

When questioned about the authorization for this lawsuit, Sankey referenced the authority of the conference’s member leaders.

He stated, “We established our First Amendment right for freedom of association, which allows our conference to make decisions regarding membership.”

Five days after the injunction was granted, LSU released a roster ahead of its game against Clemson, and it notably excluded both players involved in the lawsuit. Thus, the athletic department’s decision appears to be final.

However, a scheduled hearing is set for Wednesday in Birmingham federal court, where the SEC aims to secure a temporary restraining order to enforce regulations regarding professional athletes returning to college sports.

This restraining order could provide the SEC with the necessary support to impose penalties on LSU related to this ongoing situation.

In a statement, the SEC emphasized its right to self-governance among its member institutions, outlining, “Today’s filing is essential to defend that right and ensure the conference can manage competition among its members.”

Kiffin Reflects on Difficult Roster Decision

After LSU’s substantial win over Clemson, Kiffin discussed the tough choice not to incorporate Wright and Harris into the roster, highlighting his long-standing relationship with Wright from his Ole Miss days.

Kiffin expressed relief over the team’s performance, acknowledging that had they won in a less convincing manner, the narrative could have shifted to blame him for the roster decision.

He remarked, “I understand the criticism over the past couple of weeks. But my primary duty is to do what I see as right, regardless of public opinion. My focus is on the well-being of those kids.”

Reflecting on Wright’s loyalty to him during his transition to LSU, Kiffin emphasized the personal connection he felt in this decision.

SEC Accuses LSU of Lax Control Over Kiffin

In a recent filing, the SEC raised multiple concerns regarding LSU’s handling of the situation, asserting that officials like President Wade Rousse and Athletic Director Verge Ausberry lack effective control over Kiffin and the football program.

They expressed worries about LSU’s apparent lack of institutional control, particularly concerning Kiffin’s actions.

As it stands, with neither player returning to LSU, the focus now shifts to the unfolding legal drama with the SEC and its potential ramifications.
