North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson, the leading Republican gubernatorial candidate, said at a campaign rally earlier this month that if transgender people use the bathroom of their choice, it has nothing to do with the gender they were assigned at school. of washington post A rally video first reported on Robinson’s claims about transgender people, particularly biological men who identify as transgender women.

Robinson, RN.C., was seen speaking on camera at a campaign rally for governor of Greenville, North Carolina, earlier this month.

In the video, Robinson declared that transgender women should be arrested if they try to use bathrooms reserved for biological women.

“We’re going to protect the women of this state,” Robinson said. “So if you were a man on a Friday night and all of a sudden on Saturday you feel like a woman and you want to go into the women’s restroom at the mall, you’re going to get arrested — or what we should do. means I’ll do anything for you. “

In another video, a Republican politician says, “If you’re a man, you should go to the men’s room. If in doubt, look for a corner outside.”

The topic of LGBTQ transgender rights, particularly bathroom access, has long been controversial in North Carolina.

In 2017, the Tar Heel State became the first to ban transgender people from using public restrooms of their choice, a move that sparked significant backlash from LGBTQ advocates and activists. But a compromise by state lawmakers repealed that law, and a federal judge struck down its latest version in 2019.

Early polls in North Carolina’s Republican gubernatorial primary show Robinson leading the other candidates. Additionally, former President Donald Trump endorsed him in June, and he now has a significant fundraising advantage over his rivals.

Democrats have consistently criticized Robinson over the years, labeling him a “radical.” They draw attention to his past controversial statements on a variety of topics, including when he allegedly downplayed the Holocaust and called LGBTQ people “filth.”

But Robinson claims his words were taken out of context to suit an agenda.
