Accused CEO killer Luigi Mangione is expected to face federal charges in the coming days, in addition to the New York state first-degree murder charge he received Tuesday, law enforcement officials said.
Federal prosecutors have filed a grand jury investigation into the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson on a midtown Manhattan street on Dec. 4, people familiar with the matter told The Post. They say they have secured charges against a 26-year-old man.
It is unclear when the indictment against Mr. Mangione by the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York will be made public. The nature of the federal charges against him was not immediately known.
Mr. Mangione was sentenced Tuesday to an upgraded first-degree rap by the Manhattan District Attorney's Office on two counts of second-degree murder.
He denied carrying out the high-profile killings.
Mangione was arrested days after the Pennsylvania slaying, which Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg called a “well-planned, targeted murder.”
The Ivy Leaguer is currently being held in the Keystone State, but has waived extradition and is scheduled to be brought back to the Big Apple on Thursday.
The Manhattan federal prosecutor's office declined to comment. The newspaper has reached out to Mr. Mangione's attorney, Karen Friedman-Agnifilio, and the Manhattan prosecutor's office for comment.
If he is convicted of state first-degree murder, he could spend the rest of his life in prison.
