Paulette Thompson, the widow of the late CEO of UnitedHealthcare, Brian Thompson, met on Friday with Luigi Mangione, who has admitted to breaking federal laws related to her husband’s murder.
After Mangione’s guilty plea, she was seen leaving the courtroom. He pleaded guilty to federal stalking charges in a Manhattan court concerning the murder of Brian Thompson.
When Judge Margaret Garnett inquired if Mangione understood that he could face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment, he responded affirmatively.
During the court proceedings, Mangione mentioned that he had called UnitedHealthcare under the pretense of being an investor to gather more details about a scheduled meeting.
He explained, “After enduring severe back pain for years, I learned that UnitedHealthcare was holding an investor meeting.” Remarkably, he admitted to crafting a firearm using a 3D printer prior to his trip to New York.
On the morning of December 4, 2024, he stated, “I shot Mr. Thompson in Manhattan… I knew what I was doing.”
Federal prosecutors revealed plans to introduce substantial evidence during the trial. This includes surveillance footage, which allegedly shows Mangione arriving in New York by bus and trailing Mr. Thompson just before the incident.
Judge Garnett has set Mangione’s sentencing for December 18.
After the hearing, NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch delivered a pointed message to anyone supporting Mangione, saying, “To those who admire Luigi Mangione: I say this violence is not a cause. Murder is not a message, and murderers are never heroes.” She further noted the extensive investigative efforts undertaken by the NYPD after Mr. Thompson’s assassination, which included reviewing vast amounts of evidence and thousands of hours of surveillance footage.
