Luigi Mangione wants laptop in jail to view documents, materials in murder case

Luigi Mangione, a man accused of killing United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Cold Blood last year, sought a laptop while he awaited trial in prison.

The court filing, published late Monday, showed that Mangion, 26, wanted a laptop for legal purposes, according to the Associated Press. His lawyers proposed that it be constructed for him so that documents and other materials related to his murder could be viewed.

Mangion's attorney via the Associated Press said prosecutors at the Manhattan District Attorney's Office “frowns at the laptop request” as the witness says he is threatened, but defense attorney Karen Freeman Agnifilo said the threats had no connection to the killer.

According to court filings, if Mangione is approved to have a laptop, it is very limited as it does not have access to the internet, games, movies and other entertainment.

However, he will have access to over 15,000 pages of documents and thousands of hours of videos relating to his case, which prosecutors handed over to his lawyers.

If he is not approved, when he meets with his lawyer, he can see all the same material. He argues that Mangion doesn't have enough visit time for the day to do it in a way that “helps him prepare his defense properly.”

Mangion, a 2020 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, has been accused of shooting Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel in December 2024.

Thompson, a 50-year-old husband and father of two, was preparing to attend an investor meeting at the hotel when United Healthcare was fired from behind on the sidewalk.

Thompson's murder sent shockwaves throughout the insurance industry, urging some companies to remove biographies of top leadership members from their websites.

The crime uncovers a strange wave of support for Mangione, as many Americans became dissatisfied with health insurance and the way the industry was run.
