Lewis Gill’s Future with the Yankees
Lewis Gill might have to take another detour in the minor leagues before the 2024 AL Rookie of the Year makes his anticipated debut with the Yankees.
Aaron Boone mentioned there’s “probably a good chance” that Gill will pitch again for Triple A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, especially after allowing five runs in just 3¹/₃ innings during a recent outing on Wednesday night.
“We haven’t made a final decision on that,” Boone said, adding that they would assess everything after the next bullpen session before Friday’s game against the Phillies, which resulted in a 12-5 loss.
Gill has been sidelined all season due to a LAT injury he sustained during spring training. His appearance on Wednesday marked his first stint with Scranton after two previous outings at Double-A Somerset.
Boone’s Perspective
Interestingly, Boone himself was a midseason addition to the Yankees back in 2003. Similar to new third baseman Ryan McMahon, who was traded from the struggling Colorado Rockies and is expected to join the team for Saturday’s game, he finds himself in the thick of a pennant race.
“I think it helps me to go through that as a player,” Boone reflected. “Since I was traded at the deadline, I’m very aware that every player’s transition is different.”
His approach seems focused on ensuring that new players fit into the team environment smoothly. “Go, do your thing and find a role,” he added. “But it’s crucial that we all do our part to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable as soon as possible.”
Other Updates
After the game, the Yankees sent Scott Efros and Yorvit Vivas down to Triple A. There’s also news regarding Ryan Yarbra, who was set to throw what’s described as a “Touch and Feel” bullpen session on Friday. “He finally feels like he’s making progress, and it has all just piled up,” Boone explained.
Additionally, Fernando Cruz has resumed his throwing program, with hopes of being back on the mound by next week.
In other news, Giancarlo Stanton celebrated hitting his 435th career home run, moving past Carlos Beltran to 47th place overall, with just a few more than Andrew Jones and Juan Gonzalez.
