Lakers Celebrate Father-Daughter Bonding Night
It seemed only right that two stars from the Lakers took center stage during an event dedicated to fathers and their daughters.
A packed crowd of 19,000 fans received complimentary hats as the Lakers hosted their third annual Girl Dad Night, which honors girls in sports and the fathers supporting them.
Luka Doncic, a father of two—2-year-old Gabriella and a newborn Olivia—had his most impressive game yet, scoring 51 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and dishing out nine assists in the Lakers’ 142-130 victory over the Bulls.
LeBron James made his return to the court after sitting out the previous three games. He contributed to the team with 18 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, two steals, and one block. Reflecting on fatherhood after spending time in San Francisco with his daughter Zuri, he shared some insights on the responsibilities of raising a daughter in a world that’s always watching.
When asked what lesson he most wanted to impart to his daughter, James replied, “How to treat your mother. Love within the family. Accountability.” He noted that receiving compliments about their children’s behavior is one of the highest praises for him and his wife, Savannah.
Looking back at the crowd honoring fathers, James expressed his delight, saying, “I love my girls’ fathers. They’re so cool, and I’m happy to be a dad.” He acknowledged that being a father has definitely altered his perspective.
The Girl Dad Night was launched during Women’s History Month back in March 2024, paying tribute to two notable girl dads from the Lakers’ history, Kobe Bryant and former owner Jerry Buss. Bryant’s passion for his daughters, particularly Gianna’s aspirations in basketball, significantly influenced how sports culture recognizes girls and their supporters.
This year’s game felt like a beautiful continuation of that legacy.
Throughout the night, father-daughter moments were highlighted, with in-game host Ray A. Castillo celebrating his daughters, and a father-daughter duo, Matt and Savannah, performing the national anthem. Additionally, the Lakers girls shared the dance floor with their dads during halftime.
Just a few weeks prior, the team invited a father-daughter pair from a local nonprofit to their training facility for a basketball clinic and empowerment workshop, surprising them with tickets to this special game.
