Luka Doncic Stays with Lakers, Signs Contract Extension

Luka Doncic has decided to remain with the Los Angeles Lakers, opting not to explore free agency. Instead, he has finalized a contract extension that will keep him in L.A. through 2028.

Both Doncic and the Lakers confirmed the details of the maximum three-year extension. According to reports, the deal is valued at around $165 million, although the Lakers have chosen not to release specific details publicly.

In previous agreements, Doncic had player options for the 2026-27 season.

The star player shared thoughts about his new contract on social media, saying, “I just signed an extension with the Lakers and am excited to bring a championship to Los Angeles and continue being proud of Lakernation. Thank you to the Lakers, my teammates, and all the fans who have shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning.”

The Lakers brought Doncic into the fold last February through a significant trade involving Anthony Davis. Last season, Doncic averaged impressive stats—28.2 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.7 rebounds per game—as he partnered with LeBron James and contributed to the team’s 50 wins.

Despite the team’s elimination in the playoffs, where they lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in the first round, Doncic plans to continue in Los Angeles alongside James.

The upcoming season looks promising for the Doncic-James duo, especially with the Lakers making efforts to strengthen their roster, having recently signed veterans Deandre Ayton and Marcus Smart.
