Luka Doncic update: Lakers player making progress from hamstring injury

Luka Doncic is now over four weeks past a Grade 2 hamstring injury he suffered against the Thunder on April 2nd.

The original recovery estimate ranged from 4 to 8 weeks.

This timeline, while somewhat optimistic, is close to the limit for athletes like Doncic, whose playing style involves rapid acceleration and deceleration. For him, recovery could even extend longer.

Nonetheless, he has started the return-to-play protocols and is gradually making his way back onto the court.

Doncic has taken a particularly proactive stance toward his rehabilitation, even going so far as to travel to Spain for specialized treatment immediately after his injury, hoping to expedite his recovery.

During the Lakers’ first-round series against the Rockets, he began shooting again and managed to control his movements competently on the court.

However, according to Lakers head coach JJ Redick, Doncic hasn’t yet progressed to one-on-one drills.

This step is quite significant—it marks the beginning of real competition.

Austin Reeves recently came back from an oblique injury, doing one-on-one practice about a week before his return to play.

Fortunately for Reeves, he navigated his recovery without any setbacks. If Doncic experiences a similar recovery, which is a big “if,” he could also see an accelerated timeline.

But time is running short for the Lakers.

The Western Conference semifinals are set to kick off May 2-4.

At this point, it seems unlikely he’ll return for Game 1, especially for someone whose gameplay involves sharp turns and offensive maneuvers. Depending on when the series starts, Game 2 might not be in the cards, either.

However, Game 3, back in Los Angeles, could serve as a pivotal moment.

If Doncic embarks on one-on-one action soon and matches Reeves’ recovery pace, the five-week mark might then appear more attainable.

Until then, the Lakers’ delicate balancing act continues.

They need to keep pushing forward in the postseason, so Doncic can come back and hopefully make a difference down the line.
