Luke Murray’s Busy Week as New Boston College Coach

INDIANAPOLIS — Luke Murray has had quite a challenging week.

He was named the head coach at Boston College on Tuesday, and just six days later, he was competing for his third national championship as an assistant at Connecticut State.

“It’s been very busy and, honestly, tough,” Murray shared. “But, I feel very blessed.”

At 41, Murray has been on a long journey in coaching. He started his career at Quinnipiac back in 2007, and his path has taken him through nine different schools. He joined UConn’s Dan Hurley in 2021, contributing to an impressive 18-1 record in four NCAA tournaments.

When the opportunity at Boston College came up, he sensed it was the right moment. He didn’t feel daunted by the team’s past struggles in the ACC; after all, the Eagles haven’t made it to the NCAA Tournament since 2009 and have faced defeat in 13 of the last 15 years.

“I’m very excited. This is something I’ve been working toward for ages,” Murray remarked. “I’ve been an assistant for 19 years and have learned a lot from the coaches I’ve worked with.” He mentioned his past championship experiences and excitement about starting this new chapter.

“It’s maybe the right time. We’ve had a lot of success in Connecticut, and I’m really grateful for it. But I feel like some things just start to align. Boston College is a fantastic place with a rich tradition.”

Tackling two jobs in one week hasn’t been easy. Murray wanted to wait until the season concluded before leaving Connecticut, but preparation for his new role was also essential.

“It’s definitely challenging. I have responsibilities here, and that’s priority number one—planning for our upcoming game,” he explained. “But I also need to focus on my new role, which means getting the portal ready and talking to players and hiring staff. It’s a lot to manage, but luckily, each day gives us 24 hours to sort through it all.”

“It’s like the minutes are racing by. One moment, I’m dealing with something for Boston College, and the next, I’m jotting down notes for the game plan. It’s really a minute-to-minute challenge, and I’m doing my best to balance both.”
