Congresswoman Calls for Investigation into Patriot Front

In the wake of recent demonstrations in Washington, D.C., Florida Republican Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna has urged for a congressional probe into the group known as the Patriot Front.

The issue arose after approximately 400 masked individuals from the group marched near the U.S. Capitol and Eastern Market, donning matching attire of khaki pants, navy shirts, and white face coverings while carrying both upside-down American and Confederate flags.

The Metropolitan Police were on hand to oversee the situation and later reported that the demonstrators took public transit to nearby suburbs. Thankfully, there were no incidents involving arrests or calls for assistance during the protest.

In light of what transpired, Rep. Luna has called on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee to investigate the group’s funding and the apparent lack of oversight it has received from federal authorities so far. In a public statement, she expressed confusion over why the Patriot Front was not investigated during the Biden administration, asking, “What I find strange about the Patriot Front is why they were never investigated under the Biden administration?”

Further explaining her demand for a Congressional investigation, Luna stated, “They are well-funded. They never investigated. The FBI under the Biden administration investigated Catholics instead.” She urged the committee to act.

The Anti-Defamation League identifies this group as one of the “most prominent white supremacist organizations in the United States.” It was founded by Thomas Rousseau in 2017 following the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, and advocates for a white nation-state while opposing multiculturalism based on data from George Washington University’s Program on Extremism.

Luna’s call for an investigation comes amid criticism from other Republicans who also disapprove of the group’s activities in Washington. On CNN’s State of the Union, Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.) firmly rejected their ideology, asserting that it does not represent mainstream conservative values.

Carter denounced the marchers, stating, “What I’m saying is, that’s not the soul of America.” He further distanced Republican colleagues from the demonstration, adding, “We’re all created equal. That’s what our entire drive in this country is based on. It doesn’t represent the spirit of America.” He stressed that this view does not align with what the Republican Party represents.

During the same discussion, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum also condemned the beliefs of the organization, while emphasizing the First Amendment rights protecting public demonstrations.

Burgum clearly stated, “Certainly what they stand for is not something I agree with.” However, he pointed out the necessity for federal authorities to honor constitutional limits regarding public demonstrations, remarking, “One of the fundamental principles of America that is disrupting our democracy is free speech. There are many things that I personally find offensive and reprehensible, but we have free speech in the United States.”

As it stands, it remains uncertain whether the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee will move forward with Luna’s request for a detailed investigation into the structural and financial operations of the Patriot Front.
