Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick expressed doubts on Monday regarding the idea of terminating trade agreements with the Canadian government, which he referred to as a “socialist regime.”
“Is it possible to conduct business with Canada?” Larry Kudlow from Fox Business Network inquired during his show “Kudlow.”
“I think it’s quite complicated,” Lutnick responded. “This situation is really intricate because Canada has essentially supported us for decades, right?”
“They have a socialist regime, and they’re really benefiting from America, as the president often points out. Why do we make movies in Canada? Do we even make movies there? So, this upcoming meeting is going to be quite intriguing.”
President Trump and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney are set to meet on Tuesday, amidst ongoing trade tensions between the two nations.
Following a recent electoral win in Canada, Carney remarked that the US president has “fundamentally changed” global dynamics over the past few months, especially highlighting the merging of cleaning fees with Trump’s initiatives in the United States.
“As I’ve been warning for quite some time, America is after our land, our resources, our water, our country,” Carney stated in a victory address in Ottawa last month. “These are not idle threats. President Trump is attempting to undermine us so that America can take control. That will never come to pass.”
“However, we must acknowledge that the reality of our world has changed dramatically,” he concluded.
