A rise in home invasions throughout Los Angeles County is sparking concern among locals, prompting city leaders to ramp up police efforts aimed at curbing the trend.
Mayor Karen Bass has instructed the Los Angeles Police Department to enhance patrols along Ventura Boulevard, particularly following a string of break-ins in areas such as Sherman Oaks, Encino, and North Hollywood.
“I prioritize the safety of all Angelenos. Our city has zero tolerance for these recent burglaries,” Bass stated. “Residents deserve to feel secure in their neighborhoods, especially at home, and we will allocate the necessary resources to ensure their safety.”
The most recent break-in attempt happened early Tuesday on Noble Avenue in Sherman Oaks around 1:30 AM. According to police, intruders broke a back window but fled when they realized a resident was home.
Officials attribute this incident to a broader crime wave that began around April 10, mirroring similar robbery patterns seen in the San Fernando Valley in past years. It’s still uncertain if these incidents are interconnected or part of a concerted crime effort targeting specific locales.
This uptick in crime is particularly alarming, especially after residents expressed concerns back in 2025. That year, the LAPD had announced new strategies to combat crime in Encino following a series of violent home robberies.
At that time, officials acknowledged that while overall crime rates had declined, targeted crimes like break-ins continued to create anxiety in the affected communities.
In 2025, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell mentioned that his “heart goes out to the families mourning from this senseless loss.” He added that, statistically, while crime may be reducing, the fear and hurt it causes individuals is very real.
The police implemented an “all hands on deck” strategy, increasing nighttime patrol visibility, utilizing aerial support and license plate readers, as well as collaborating with regional task forces to tackle organized burglary networks. They also expanded community outreach efforts to reassure residents.
As the recent crime surge continues, the LAPD’s Operation Valley has intensified its enforcement, heightened patrols, and increased visible police presence in the areas hardest hit. Officers are also deploying mobile license plate readers and collaborating across departments to locate and apprehend suspects involved in substantial thefts.
Local officials are stressing a zero-tolerance policy, citing the urgency to prevent what residents describe as unsettling crime that persists “night after night.”
“What’s happening in the Valley is absolutely unacceptable,” officials stated, emphasizing their commitment to increasing resources for capturing those responsible.
Despite the increased police visibility, many community members report that burglaries remain a serious issue, leading some neighborhoods to take initiative in organizing efforts against crime.
Residents in North Hollywood are coming together in response to a recent surge of break-ins in Sylmar, Valley Village, Valley Glen, and Toluca Lake. One reported incident involved thieves entering a home through a second-floor balcony to steal cash and valuables.
“It’s fantastic to have this community. We really look out for each other, which feels crucial right now,” said resident Karin Gault.
For some, everyday routines like nighttime dog walks have transformed into informal neighborhood watch patrols.
“It’s unsettling, considering everything that’s been happening,” Gault shared.
Others believe that community members may need to take extra steps for their safety, not just rely on law enforcement.
The LAPD is advising residents to implement basic safety measures as crime rates climb. The North Hollywood Division has reported an uptick in residential burglaries, urging homeowners to ensure security cameras are functional, securely fasten windows and doors, and inform neighbors and security services if they’ll be away for a while.
As investigations continue to identify suspects and discern potential links between crimes, the LAPD has committed to maintaining an increased presence in the San Fernando Valley.
Meanwhile, authorities are stressing the importance of vigilance and reporting any suspicious behavior, as concerns linger over whether the enhancements to robbery response will effectively break the cycle of ongoing thefts.
