Mexican authorities have confirmed that a lynch mob beat and hanged three men who were believed to have broken into a home and tried to kidnap a 5-year-old girl.
The incident occurred over the weekend in the small community of San Juan Améca, Puebla state, a short distance south of Mexico City. Based on information released by the state government of Puebla, authorities received reports of a lynching in progress and dispatched local and state police squads to help control the crowd. By the time authorities arrived, the lynch mob had hung the three men from telephone poles near the orchard. el sol de mexico reported.
According to preliminary information, the lynching began shortly after 3pm on Saturday when local residents raised the alarm about break-ins and a possible attempted kidnapping of the girl. Neighbors rushed to the house and were able to apprehend the three suspects.
For several minutes, the mob repeatedly beat the men and tore off some of their clothing. The group forced the men into an orchard, where they hanged them. infobae reported.
Concerns about lynching appear to be growing in Mexico amid growing dissatisfaction with the failure of the security strategy promoted by the ruling MORENA party. Policy failures led to increased crime and impunity across the country. According to the NGO Causa Commune, there were 11 lynchings and 45 attempted lynchings in Mexico in the first half of 2024.
