Macaulay Culkin Sets Boundaries with Fans
Macaulay Culkin has some clear rules for fans wanting to approach him in public.
On the “SmartLess” podcast, hosted by Jason Bateman and Will Arnett, he shared that while he appreciates his fans, he prefers to keep a distance when he’s spending time with his family.
The 45-year-old actor, who has two young kids—Dakota, 4, and Carson, 3—with actress Brenda Song, stated, “When I’m at the dinner table, don’t come near me. I don’t like that. When I’m with the kids, don’t come near me.”
Culkin also mentioned that fans should “never” follow him into the restroom.
He began to establish these boundaries after realizing that he has control over his interactions with fans outside of formal events.
“I now realize that I am in charge of the social contract,” Culkin noted, adding, “I can guide this interaction.”
Starting his career as a child actor in the late ’80s, Culkin became a household name with the 1990 blockbuster “Home Alone,” which solidified his fame.
However, at just 14 and following successes like “Home Alone 2: Lost in New York,” “My Girl,” and “Richie Rich,” he began to slow down his acting career just as he was hitting his peak.
When asked if college was ever a consideration during that time, he candidly confessed, “I just didn’t really understand what it meant to get a degree in general.”
He reflected, “For example, if I wanted to study English literature or something like that, I think that makes sense. But I didn’t necessarily have those bones in my body.”
Culkin explained that he spent years exploring what he wanted to do, eventually moving to London around 20, where he appeared in plays before returning to the U.S.
In a recent chat with “Mythical Kitchen,” he elaborated on why he stepped away from Hollywood.
“All I wanted was to be with people my age,” Culkin said, admitting that much of his childhood work didn’t involve ensemble casts. “I wanted to go out. I wanted to date girls. I wanted to hang out with people my age. I wanted to go to parties,” he lamented. “I don’t know how many bar mitzvahs I’ve missed.”
Culkin also recalled how he got into acting nearly by chance when their dad, Kit Culkin, took his older siblings for headshots. “My mom just wanted to rest, so she said, ‘Take Mac,’” he reminisced. “Out of the gate, my first audition was booked, booked, booked.”
This line of work seemed to find him, he concluded, which explains why he came back to it.
After taking a break, the “My Girl” star made his return to the screen in 2003 with “Party Monster.”
