Nancy Mace Enters South Carolina Governor Race
Republican Rep. Nancy Mace has officially launched her campaign for governor of South Carolina, criticizing what she describes as the state’s “weak leadership.” Her announcement appears to be a strategic shot at state Republican figures, particularly the long-serving attorney general, who is also a competitor for the Republican nomination.
Mace and attorney general Alan Wilson are now considered key players in the GOP primary for the 2026 race, which seeks to fill the position currently held by Henry McMaster, the longest-serving governor in the state. Shortly after Mace declared her candidacy, Wilson responded, alleging that Mace has been vocal about her ambitions while not directly communicating with the governor.
Mace earlier claimed she was determined to fight against Wilson, accusing him of neglecting issues affecting women and children. This underscores the high stakes of the campaign, especially as Mace has made both personal and public allegations regarding her own experiences with abuse.
Wilson has strongly denied her accusations, asserting that no such claims ever reached him or his office. He further accused Mace of being dishonest, suggesting that she’s attempting to divert attention from her own voting history while emphasizing his commitment to protecting children in South Carolina.
In a recent interview, Wilson highlighted his military experience and how it relates to the governor’s role as commander of the South Carolina National Guard. He proudly mentioned having nearly 30 years of military service, contrasting his background with Mace’s prior military academy attendance. With endorsements from 26 sheriffs statewide, including those in Mace’s district, Wilson plans to focus on education reform, infrastructure investment, and tackling wasteful government spending if elected.
Mace’s campaign launch took place at the Citadel, her former military college, making her the first female alumna to run for governor. Despite this historic significance, Wilson pointed out his extensive military credentials and law enforcement support, suggesting that he has a more substantial record of achievements.
As the race heats up, both candidates will have to navigate their relationships with prominent party figures like former President Donald Trump, who has yet to choose a side in the primary. Mace recently expressed her intention to earn Trump’s backing, claiming she would work hard for it.
Wilson, for his part, emphasized his longstanding support for Trump during his tenure as attorney general, suggesting that his loyalty may ultimately benefit him in the race.
This primary is shaping up to be a significant contest, with various candidates vying for the opportunity to lead South Carolina in the coming years.
