Macklin Celebrini’s Impressive NHL Extension

Macklin Celebrini, the rising star of the San Jose Sharks, is on the verge of becoming one of the highest-paid players in NHL history, even as he steps into just his third season. This summer, he signed a five-year extension worth $94 million, which will kick in for the 2027-28 season and grant him an average annual value (AAV) of $18.8 million.

Sharks’ General Manager Mike Grier must be quite pleased with this deal. Interestingly, though, Celebrini chose to leave some money on the table. Reports suggest that players can earn up to 20% of the team’s salary cap per season, which would have allowed him to demand around $20.8 million annually. The Sharks likely would have obliged him, but Celebrini appears focused on the bigger picture, opting for a salary that keeps the team’s competitive future in mind.

“I want to make sure that with where the (NHL salary) cap was going, that the number made sense for the team first and foremost,” Celebrini explained. “Making sure that everyone can get paid and that we’re in a good spot to build the way we want to build, I felt like we kind of landed on that number.” He believes that maintaining flexibility in the budget isn’t a bad thing, adding, “I’m committed to this team and this organization.”

The extra $2 million he could have pushed for could be crucial down the line, especially when the Sharks begin to rekindle their competitive edge, which seems likely. With promising talents like Celebrini, Will Smith, William Eklund, and Michael Misa, it’s not far-fetched to think this team will soon attract top free agents again. They missed the playoffs by only a few points last season, which may further entice potential signings.

The Sharks will kick off their preseason against the Anaheim Ducks on September 20 and start their regular season at home against the Florida Panthers on October 1.
