Macron promises France will recognize the 'State of Palestine' at the UN in September

Macron’s Announcement on Palestine Recognition

French President Emmanuel Macron recently shared his plans on X to push for France’s recognition of “Palestine” at the upcoming UN General Assembly in September.

In a letter directed to the president of the Palestinian authorities, Macron stated that “the French want peace in the Middle East,” emphasizing the necessity of an “immediate ceasefire,” the release of hostages, and humanitarian aid for Gaza. He argued for the demilitarization of Hamas and called for the reconstruction of Gaza as part of this initiative.

Israel’s Strong Reaction

Israeli officials were quick to express their disapproval. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned Macron’s decision, arguing that it could endanger Israel by giving rise to another Iranian proxy, similar to the situation in Gaza. He warned that recognizing a Palestinian state under current conditions would, in his view, serve as a platform for attacks against Israel.

Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Minister Yalib Levin labeled this move as “a black stain on French history,” insisting that it would bolster terrorism. He affirmed that “the land of Israel belongs to the people of Israel,” indicating that Macron’s recognition would not alter this belief and suggested that Israel should apply sovereignty over Judea, Samaria, and the Jordan Valley as a response to France’s stance.

Criticism from Israeli Leaders

Diaspora Issues Minister Amichai Chikuri took to X to convey the Israeli government’s sentiments, even sharing a video that went viral, purportedly showing France’s First Lady slapping the president. Knesset member Avigdor Liberman also chimed in, arguing that promoting a Palestinian state rewards fear and emboldens Hamas, which he described as responsible for one of the most tragic events in Jewish history.

The letter advocating for recognition was transmitted through the French consul in Jerusalem, who announced that “France will advance full recognition of the Palestinian province in September.” Recently, France has taken more assertive steps against Israel, including a joint condemnation with several other countries regarding the deaths of Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

Macron concluded with a hopeful statement: “We achieve peace.” The next UN General Assembly session is set to commence on September 9th.
