Macron's Acknowledgment of Palestinian State 'Is Irrelevant'

Trump Responds to Macron’s Recognition of Palestinian State

President Donald Trump commented that French President Emmanuel Macron’s choice to recognize the Palestinian state “is not a problem,” asserting that it won’t alter the situation in the Middle East.

Trump made these remarks to reporters outside the White House on Friday, following Macron’s announcement earlier in the week.

“Look, he’s a different kind of guy,” Trump remarked about Macron. “He’s fine. He’s a team player. A good guy, but it doesn’t matter what he says.”

He continued, “Nothing will change. The statement doesn’t weigh in. He’s a very nice guy; I like him—but that statement doesn’t have an impact.”

Macron has been vocal about his support for Palestine, posting on social media just the day before that he intends to make a formal announcement recognizing the Palestinian state at the upcoming UN General Assembly in September.

“The French people want peace in the Middle East, and this shows that it’s possible with us, the French, Israelis, Palestinians, and our European and international partners,” he stated.

Macron also reiterated his call for an “immediate ceasefire,” emphasizing the need for the release of Israeli hostages held by Hamas and the provision of humanitarian aid to Gaza residents.

“Ultimately, it’s crucial to bolster all aspects of security in the Middle East by establishing a Palestinian state, ensuring its viability, accepting its demilitarization, and acknowledging Israel,” Macron added.

He mentioned that he has communicated with the President of the Palestinian authorities regarding a shared determination to advance peace through “confidence, clarity, and commitment.”

In response, Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed strong discontent with Macron’s proposal, labeling it a “face slap” to the victims of the Hamas attack on Israeli citizens from October 7, 2023.
