Macy’s to Shut Down 14 Stores Nationwide, Two in California

Macy’s, the well-known department store chain founded back in 1858, is set to close 14 locations across the U.S., which includes two stores in California. It’s kind of a big deal, especially since they’ve been a staple in retail for so long.

Further down the line, the chain aims to close a total of 66 stores by 2025, with one of those in Los Angeles. Just last year, they declared plans to shutter 150 underperforming stores by the end of 2026 after Tony Spring took over as CEO.

Interestingly, of the 14 closures, the California stores are located in La Mesa at Grossmont Center and in Tracy at West Valley Mall.

In a somewhat more immediate sense, one of the closures is at Pittsburgh Mills Mall in Tarentum, Pennsylvania, which is expected to happen on April 26. It makes you think—how many more of these iconic places are at risk?

The rest of the stores earmarked to close are primarily concentrated in several states, though exact dates for those closings remain uncertain.

  • 4880 Briarcliff Road NE, Atlanta, GA
  • 7900 Ritchie Hwy., Glen Burnie, MD
  • 3850 Rivertown Parkway SW, MI
  • 4101 W Division St., St. Cloud, MN
  • 50 Fox Run Rd., Newington, NH
  • 112 Eisenhower Parkway, Livingston, NJ
  • 225 Interstate Shopping Center, Ramsey, NJ
  • 1255 Niagara Falls Blvd., Amherst, NY
  • 3801 Sumner Blvd., Raleigh, NC
  • 5488 South Padre Island Dr., Corpus Christi, TX
  • 17855 Southcenter Parkway, Tukwila, WA

As for when they might confirm the next phase of closures, that’s still up in the air. Macy’s has mentioned they will announce these on an ongoing basis as they assess how different stores are performing. All of this is part of a strategy to reduce expenses and concentrate on stores that are actually thriving, along with enhancing luxury brands and improving online shopping experiences.
