Maduro's Capture Sends a Global Message, Trump 'Is Serious'

U.S. Operates to Arrest Maduro, Sending a Message to Adversaries

Secretary of State Marco Rubio characterized the recent operation to capture former Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro as a clear warning to America’s adversaries to opt for cooperation instead of reckless actions. He emphasized that President Donald Trump is “not a game player.”

During a press conference on Saturday, Rubio elaborated on the U.S. military’s detention of Maduro and his wife, Syria Flores, who are facing multiple criminal charges in the United States. There had been a $50 million reward for information leading to Maduro’s capture, a measure maintained since Trump returned to the White House. Following the arrest, Attorney General Pam Bondi stated that Maduro faces severe charges, including “narco-terrorism conspiracy” and possession of weapons.

U.S. and Western Hemisphere law enforcement officials assert that Maduro led the Cartel de los Soles, a major cocaine trafficking organization. He is also believed to have links to terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah and has supported nations like Iran and Cuba, which sponsor terrorism.

Rubio reiterated that neither the Trump administration nor former President Joe Biden acknowledges Maduro as Venezuela’s legitimate leader. Maduro took over from the late Hugo Chávez and has maintained power through disputed elections, including one in 2024 where opposition leader María Colina Machado claimed victory.

He noted that the U.S. is attempting to explore less confrontational approaches to improve the chaotic situation in Venezuela, although Maduro has not been cooperative. He implied that no one in Maduro’s circle helped with the arrest, quipping, “I think we just saved $50 million.”

Rubio explained that Maduro had many chances to avoid consequences but chose to misbehave instead. He further described Maduro’s actions, including inviting Iran into Venezuela and seizing American oil interests while allowing gang members to infiltrate the U.S.

He expressed hope that the message is clear: “The 47th president of the United States is not a game player.” Rubio emphasized Trump as a decisive leader, questioning why anyone would doubt that.

Rubio clarified that the Trump administration is not looking for conflict but is reacting to the threats posed by organized crime and Maduro. He also highlighted Maduro’s ties to Cuba as an ongoing issue for Venezuela, stating that it needs to assert its independence from Cuban influence.

Following Maduro’s arrest, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez is set to oversee the country temporarily, demonstrating a willingness to engage with U.S. officials. Trump shared that the U.S. will assist in managing Venezuela until a democratic leader emerges.

Reports indicate that Maduro and Flores will be heading to New York to face legal proceedings.
