Bill Maher Questions National Guard Deployments

On Friday, Bill Maher, the host of “Real Time,” cautioned his audience that military presence in U.S. cities is becoming a reality. This follows the deployment of the National Guard to places like Los Angeles and Washington, D.C.

Maher reflected on how, if you’ve been tuned out over the summer, you might have missed the concerning developments. He remarked, “America is changing, and soon military personnel might be a common sight in various cities.” Last month, Trump activated around 800 members of the DC National Guard to help tackle crime and restore order in the nation’s capital.

He expressed concerns about the implications of the National Guard’s presence, especially following the violent events surrounding the Capitol. Maher critiqued why law enforcement leaders didn’t protest the use of military personnel in everyday settings like D.C. and Los Angeles, posing a rhetorical question about whether that doesn’t seem troubling.

According to Maher, deploying troops for crime control is a significant deviation from past norms, reserved only for genuine emergencies. He noted that crime levels in Washington have not escalated to warrant such a response.

Maher poked fun at Trump’s assertion of not being a dictator, sarcastically suggesting that such claims often come with ulterior motives. He cited a specific incident involving a government staff member as part of the rationale behind the administration’s tough stance on crime.

While he acknowledged the crime issues in the capital, Maher pointed out that Republican-led cities, which also struggle with high crime rates, aren’t seeing similar military deployments.

He cited data from local police to challenge Trump’s claims of an 87% drop in violent crime rates in D.C. Maher cautioned that while military presence might lower crime temporarily, it could have deeper implications for democracy, signaling troubling times ahead if there’s an acceptance of military force in civil settings.

His closing thoughts served as a warning about the potential future of policing and political conflict in the U.S. if military forces become commonplace on the streets.
