Maher says Trump administration’s detaining of Mahmoud Khalil hurts free speech

“Real-Time” host Bill Maher had several choice words for the Trump administration following the arrest of anti-Israel activist Mahmoud Khalil.

Halil, a protester at Columbia University, a Syrian citizen, was taken into custody by ICE this week after the Department of Homeland Security announced that he would cancel his green card and student visa, which he said was “in line with Hamas, a designated terrorist organization.”

During a panel discussion on Friday, Maher predicted that “future historians” would look back and assume that both parties “forgotten their freedom of speech.”

“We talked about JD Vance's speech in Europe a few weeks ago. We got on them about how there's a big problem there and there's a big problem in this country… But this administration doesn't really have feet standing up. They don't care about that either.”

“I don't agree with his perspective, but what do you know? If you're an honest person, if you believe in freedom of speech, you have to protect him. “I say it whenever it's on the other leg, and it can't change because it's this guy now. It's protecting a bag of dirt you hate.”

“I don't think they have anything to this guy except that they're saying things that the kids believe right now. I never saw this coming, this strange alliance of jihadism and awakening.[Intifada] The only solution! “Really? [Intifada] Is there a global only solution? Where is that in this guy? I think it's scary. He hates this country. He hates Western civilizations. And I defend his right to say it to his death,” he added.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio argued that Halil's arrest and taxation “is not about freedom of speech.”

“When you come to the US as a visitor, that's the existence of a visa. This is how this individual entered this country with a visitor's visa – as a visitor, we can deny you that visa,” Rubio said. “Hello, when I say to us, “Hello, I'm about to enter the US on a student visa. I'm a massive supporter of Hamas, a murderous, wild barrage group that rapes teenage girls who have lured children. I'm going to come to your country as a student and revive all sorts of anti-Semitic students, anti-Semitic activities.”

“If you actually end up doing that in this country with such a visa, we will revoke it. And if you have a green card as a result of that visa, not citizenship, we will drive you out while you are doing those activities. By the way, the rights to the green card.”
