Comedian and TV host Bill Maher got into a heated confrontation with Star Trek actor and author William Shatner on a new podcast over whether Vice President Harris is a “great” candidate.
Shatner joined Maher's “Club Random” podcast on Sunday's episode to discuss the presidential election and Harris' loss.
“To be honest, she wasn't a great candidate,” Maher said. Highlighted by Mediaite.
“Why wouldn't she be a great candidate?” Shatner asked. “She combined several ideological trends here, black, female.”
“It's not the candidates. … That's identity politics,” Maher responded.
Mr. Shatner argued that these are the elements of a candidate.
Maher acknowledged that there are “tribes” of people who vote for people who are most like them. But he said the election results proved candidates “need to go further” than emphasizing their own identities.
“Black people, you can't just be a woman. I mean, Trump won a quarter of black men,” Maher said.
“Democrats don't understand their constituencies,” Maher added, echoing sentiments coming from across the Democratic tent following a disastrous election that gave Republicans control of the White House and the House and Senate majorities. did.
Maher noted that Hispanic voters have shifted significantly toward Trump over the past four years.
“If you're Mexican-American, who's afraid of having their job taken away by a guy who comes across the border? Of course they like a guy who says, 'Keep everyone out.'” said Maher.
Maher believes Democrats could have won the election if President Biden had stepped aside earlier and had a “real primary season,” rather than anointing Harris at the last minute. He said he was there.
