Main insights from recent elections in Arizona and Georgia

Adelita Grijalva, the former Pima County manager, won a special election for Arizona’s 7th Congressional District on Tuesday. This is significant as she is stepping into the seat previously held by her father, Raul Grijalva, who passed away earlier this year.

She secured a victory against Republican candidate Daniel Butierrez, representing a district covering much of Arizona’s southern border, including parts of Tucson. This election came about due to her father’s death in March, which was a result of complications from cancer treatment.

Her win is not just a personal milestone; it also enables both parties to push for a vote concerning the release of documents tied to Jeffrey Epstein and the Department of Justice.

Meanwhile, in Georgia, while Republicans maintained control over their Senate seats during special elections, Democrats found some reasons to be optimistic.

These elections in Arizona and Georgia highlight significant takeaways for both parties.

Final Votes on Epstein Secured

The victory for Grijalva means that there are now enough votes among lawmakers to advance discussions on the Epstein-related files, which involve notable financiers.

Representatives Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) will have enough support for a discharge petition as soon as Grijalva is officially sworn in.

The handling of the Epstein files by the Trump administration has frustrated members from both sides of the aisle, especially after a recent determination from the Justice Department that Epstein lacked a “client list.”

In an effort to clarify matters, House Republican leaders have released various documents from Epstein’s estate and held private meetings with some of Epstein’s accusers. Still, this did little to pacify Republican signatories of the discharge petition.

Massie and Khanna found backing from all Democrats, and some GOP figures like Marjorie Taylor Greene (Ga.), Nancy Mace (SC), and Lauren Boebert (Co.) were less enthusiastic. Grijalva is set to provide a crucial vote for them.

Continuing a Progressive Legacy

The late Raul Grijalva was a prominent progressive figure, known for his leadership in the Progressive Caucus and the Natural Resources Committee. He was a strong advocate for environmental justice and had notable conflicts with the Trump administration over environmental policies.

Adelita Grijalva is expected to carry on this progressive agenda. Her platform emphasizes uniting people to tackle pressing issues in Southern Arizona, such as affordable housing and climate resilience.

Notably, she received endorsements from prominent progressive leaders, including Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.).

Georgia Elections: A Mixed Bag for Democrats

In Georgia, Democrats showed some promise in the Senate 21 district, where they garnered a substantial portion of the total vote in a recent special election. However, they ultimately lost to Republican Jason Dickerson, a newcomer in politics.

Democrat Debra Sigre managed to secure nearly 40% of the vote, but Dickerson, meanwhile, faced several Republican challengers, achieving over 17% in a crowded field.

Despite losing, Democrats were buoyed by the overall performance, especially given the dynamics leading into November’s elections, where they expect significant gains.

There seems to be a growing trend where Democrats are performing surprisingly well in competitive districts. Ken Martin, chair of the Democratic National Committee, noted this shift, indicating that Republicans might be feeling anxious nationwide while Democrats are finding success across a variety of districts.
