Maine taxpayers are paying for new apartments built specifically for newly arrived border crossers and undocumented immigrants, who must pay at least two years' worth of rent.
This week, Maine officials in Brunswick announced new apartments that will pay rent for at least two years to border crossers and illegal aliens, News Center Maine report:
on monday, Dozens of people gathered at Brunswick Landing to celebrate the completion of 60 new apartments in five buildings. Of these, 24 have already been completed. These units are designed to house asylum seekers waiting to receive work permits. This process often takes a long time, as asylum seekers cannot even apply for permission for at least six months after submitting their initial asylum application. [Emphasis added]
This program is run through the Maine Housing Authority. MaineHousing essentially pays these asylum seekers rent for up to two years. After that, it would be converted to a mix of market-rate and affordable housing, unless the state says it needs to extend the program. [Emphasis added]
