Maine Democrats reveal their plan following Platner's significant announcement

Maine Democratic Party Faces Challenges After Platner’s Campaign Suspension

This week has been particularly tough for the Maine Democratic Party. Graham Platner, who was recently accused of rape by his ex-girlfriend, is edging closer to stepping back from his campaign.

On Wednesday evening, Platner shared an 11-minute video on social media where he announced he was “temporarily suspending election activities.”

In his video, he stressed, “What happens next needs to come from the people.” Even though he upholds his innocence, he expressed frustration towards the Democratic establishment, indicating that it’s become untenable for him to continue as a candidate.

He clarified, “This is incredibly difficult because some might interpret this as an admission of guilt, but it’s definitely not. It’s not about suspicion. We’re making this move due to the structures that those in power have stripped away from us.”

While he suggested that he hadn’t completed the necessary paperwork to officially end his campaign, he did imply that he plans to do so by the required deadline.

Platner encouraged his supporters to participate in a 48-hour survey with two questions, emphasizing the need for involvement in the nomination process.

His message noted, “We firmly believe that the supporters and volunteers who built this movement deserve a real role in any nomination process. If Democrats want to keep those hundreds of thousands of supporters engaged, they need to consider their feedback.”

Details about the next steps remain somewhat uncertain, but party leaders are actively figuring out a solution for selecting a new candidate. It’s unclear if they will satisfy Platner’s call for involvement from the public.

Reports from various media outlets indicated that Democratic Party leaders are planning to appoint a new candidate through a convention that could consist of around 600 delegates.

The Bangor Daily News noted that this convention will likely involve 500 delegates selected based on county commissions, along with 100 members of the state committee.

These plans are set to be confirmed soon by the party. On Wednesday, Maine Democratic Party Executive Director Devon Murphy Anderson stated that Platner accused the party of diverting focus from defeating Susan Collins and reiterated the goal of creating “a representative, transparent, and inclusive process” for choosing a new candidate, should Platner exit the race.

He added, “While Graham Platner’s attempts to influence this process are frustrating, we value his supporters and their commitment to defeating Susan Collins. They are vital to our party and deserve a say in selecting Mr. Platner’s successor.”

Before anything can proceed regarding the convention, Mr. Platner must formally suspend his candidacy. The deadline for this action is approaching—Monday at 5 PM Eastern Time.

The Democratic Party needs to finalize and announce a candidate to the Maine Secretary of State by July 27.
