Transport Secretary’s Warning to Sanctuary Cities

Transport Secretary Sean Duffy issued a cautionary statement to “rogue national actors” that haven’t cooperated with federal immigration enforcement, suggesting they may have to address the consequences of their actions themselves.

As riots and fires persist in Los Angeles, paired with protests in various cities nationwide, Duffy emphasized that political leaders need to improve their collaboration with the Trump administration. He stated, “USDOT will not fund national actors who refuse to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement,” reiterating the urgency of adherence to federal laws.

Moreover, he mentioned that these cities shouldn’t expect financial support while there are ongoing disturbances damaging critical infrastructure.

Duffy’s remarks also highlighted concerns surrounding sanctuary jurisdictions, where, if cooperation is lacking, federal immigration agents could intensify their operations. The Transport Secretary articulated, “We either follow the law or lose our funds,” driving home the urgency for compliance.

California’s ongoing standoff with the Trump administration regarding state responses to urban unrest was referenced, particularly in regards to Governor Gavin Newsom’s stance. Trump, in support of federal officers, acknowledged their hard work in what he described as crucial deportation efforts. He commented on the challenges these officers face, including threats and harassment from political opposition.

On the other hand, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson characterized ICE operations in his city as “terrorism,” expressing that Trump’s leadership resembles a backward step in time—akin to a Confederacy rather than modern governance. This sentiment echoed among various city leaders concerned about the implications of these policies.

In contrast, New York City Mayor Eric Adams adopted a different tone, instructing his office and the NYPD to allow federal authorities to conduct their operations without interference. He made it clear that protests that obstruct these actions would not be tolerated in the city.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass raised concerns about the economic impact of immigration enforcement efforts, stating that the resultant chaos has had damaging effects on her city’s workforce.

While tensions run high, the varying reactions from city leaders showcase a complex landscape of governance, community safety, and federal involvement in immigration matters.
