New Developments in the 2006 Murder Trial of Former Miami Hurricanes Player

As the murder trial of a former Miami Hurricanes player was set to begin, a surprising twist emerged.

ESPN recently reported that an important witness, previously believed to be dead, reappeared and was found alive in Louisville, Kentucky. This witness, Paul Connor, lives in an apartment where defensive lineman Brian Pata was allegedly shot in the head by teammate Rashaun Jones.

Connor reported hearing a “pop” and observed someone jogging nearby right after the shooting. He has identified Jones multiple times from a lineup.

In July, prosecutors informed Florida 11th Circuit Judge Christina Miranda that Connor had died, but his discovery has raised questions. Police had relied on outdated information about Connor’s status, which the state attorney’s office acknowledged in communications with ESPN.

“Is that impacting the case? I think it might be,” remarked Ed Griffith, a spokesman for the state attorney’s office.

Jones, who pleaded not guilty, is set for trial on October 6th. His lawyer expressed deep concerns over the situation.

“I’m not surprised, but it’s disturbing,” commented Sarah Alvarez, the defense attorney. “This is a serious issue. It’s essentially a blatant lie.”

She added, “It’s unacceptable to consider imprisoning someone for life without solid evidence while failing to acknowledge evidence that may exist.”

However, it seems Connor’s reliability might be compromised. “I’ve been awake for years. My memories are kind of jumbled. How long ago was this lawsuit, anyway?” he remarked.

During an earlier bond hearing in March 2022, Jones was granted bail of $850,000, but he’s still been in custody for four years without the funds for release.

Witness accounts have included claims of previous altercations between Pata and Jones, with Jones allegedly mentioning possessing a firearm similar to the one thought to have been used in the murder.

The entire investigation has faced numerous challenges; notably, police took nine months to arrest Jones, even though he was among the initial suspects.
