A global IT outage is causing chaos tonight, halting banking services, disrupting flights, preventing supermarket shopping and causing chaos for public transport users.
There were reports of disruptions to parts of the national bank payment system this evening, as well as global network outages for television and Microsoft services.
The Federal Aviation Administration grounded flights of several major U.S. airlines, including Delta, United and American Airlines, due to communications problems.
Herald Readers have told us stories of queues at supermarkets due to overcrowding at cash registers, and not being able to board or disembark from Auckland Transport’s HOP cards.
Issues have been reported with debit and credit cards from ASB, ANZ, Kiwibank and more.
ANZ Tap n Pay and Visa payWave are also reported to be down.

ASB confirmed that some of its services were down due to an “external vendor issue” that affected telecoms and banking companies around the world.
BNZ and Westpac Herald I have had no issues with online banking or payment systems.

A man at Woolworths Hobsonville said there had been queues of people having trouble at the tills due to issues with EFTPOS.
Newstalk ZB listeners are reporting outages affecting Mitre 10 in Hamilton, as well as customers at Bunnings, SBS Bank and Zero.
A person texted NZME to say Auckland Transport’s tag-on/tag-off terminals were also not working.

Christchurch International Airport has announced that an IT issue may cause flight disruptions.

Users have reported that computers running Microsoft Windows have crashed all over the world, causing their computers to display a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD).

Reports of the outage have been made online through the Downdetector website, indicating issues with Microsoft 365 services.
The issue is reportedly linked to an update by cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike.
CrowdStrike said its “engineering teams are actively working to resolve this issue.”
Sky says Crowdstrike is down.
“The supermarkets were in chaos.” Herald readers wrote on social media.
“The self-checkouts all started giving errors and resetting. By the time I got to the front of the line there were only two or three functioning self-checkouts left.”
Another wrote: “The reports of BSOD crashes of computer systems are bothering me. I went to Chemist Warehouse and Woolies today and both had at least one computer system with a BSOD issue, and the computer system at Chemist Warehouse was stuck in a reboot and BSOD loop. Weird.”
