Major, ‘Life-Threatening’ Storm to Hit California — for a Week

California is facing a “life-threatening” storm this week that began on Saturday, intensified Sunday into Monday, and will continue to dump sporadic rain across the Golden State through Friday.

of Los Angeles Times report Saturday:

“There continues to be a high risk of life-threatening flooding across the region, as well as large waves and coastal flooding in many coastal areas,” said Robbie Munro, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Los Angeles. Saturday webinar.

Weather officials expect 3 to 6 inches of rain to fall on Southern California’s coasts and valleys, and 6 to 12 inches in the mountains and foothills. Precipitation totals are expected to reach the upper end of the range in many locations, including urban areas. Mr Munro said this was “very concerning” as the ground was still wet from Thursday’s atmospheric river storm.

Lightning is also possible across a wide swath of the state, from Lake Tahoe to Mendocino to downtown Los Angeles. “This is not common in this part of the world,” he said.

of san francisco chronicle called Impending storms are “rare” and “extreme”:

The effects of the storm began to be felt Saturday afternoon, and the National Weather Service expected the storm to increase in strength late in the evening and into Sunday. San Jose authorities declared a state of emergency Saturday night, warning of the possibility of widespread flooding and asking people to seek shelter in higher ground.
The storm is drawing in plumes of deep moisture from the tropics, known as atmospheric rivers. The tropical component of the storm could bring the threat of localized tornadoes along the coast Sunday, heavy rain and damaging wind gusts across the Bay Area. Coastal areas could see wind gusts of up to 110 mph during the day Sunday, while inland areas could see gusts of up to 90 mph, especially in the afternoon. Higher wind gusts are possible at higher elevations along the coast, such as Mount Tamalpais.

Forecasters warned that a storm would hit California’s central coast early Sunday, bringing hurricane-force winds.

This storm system is believed to be the first major storm of the winter when weather conditions are influenced by El Niño, a periodic warming of the eastern Pacific Ocean. California experienced record snowfall last winter, but this season has been relatively dry so far.
