Major networks do not broadcast Trump's election speech live

On Thursday, ABC News, NBC News, and CNN chose not to air President Donald Trump’s prime-time speech live. This address focused on issues related to election security and the perceived weaknesses evident during the 2020 election.

During his speech, Trump asserted that “critical information” about the 2020 election had been “hidden and withheld” from the public. He specifically pointed fingers at China, alleging that newly declassified documents include a CIA report claiming the Chinese Communist Party attempted to prevent Joe Biden’s re-election and that they allegedly sought to create illegal ballots for him.

Before his address, five liberal networks organized their strategies for addressing Trump’s comments.

A spokesperson from CNN mentioned that the network would treat Trump’s speech as a news event, offering coverage, analysis, and commentary. While they opted not to broadcast it live, the speech was accessible on their website and streaming services.

CNN anchor John King explained that the network’s reluctance stemmed from Trump’s history of making misleading statements regarding elections. He emphasized the need to independently verify the newly released documents.

Trump addresses election integrity

ABC News did air Trump’s speech on its streaming platform and radio. They confirmed earlier that their news segments would also cover it. Similarly, NBC News aired segments on their streaming service and later broadcast a special report summarizing the speech.

Both networks provided special reports that highlighted Trump’s comments right after their standard programming.

While ABC and NBC’s subsidiaries under Sinclair Broadcast Group aired the speech prior to their networks, they faced criticism from Trump, who labeled their actions as “fake news.”

In his speech, he stated, “They don’t like this topic because they know how corrupt our system is and they don’t want to expose it.” He accused them of being part of a broader conspiracy and expressed the belief that the media aimed to maintain what he called a fraud.

He went on to suggest that their conduct should warrant a revocation of their broadcasting licenses, adding, “They are using our public broadcasting service, which is worth billions, for nothing.” Trump insisted they should prioritize “integrity in our elections and integrity in our reporting.”

Neither ABC News nor NBC News provided immediate responses regarding Trump’s comments.

CBS News provided analysis just minutes after Trump’s speech began, covering his comments aimed at ABC and NBC.

It’s not unusual for networks to decline airing prime-time presidential addresses. For example, ABC, CBS, and NBC chose not to air Barack Obama’s 2014 speech on immigration. Similarly, they bypassed Biden’s 2022 address in which he criticized MAGA Republicans.
