Only 16 teams remain in the NCAA Softball Tournament after a chaotic opening weekend of regional play. Amid some confusion, the most striking development occurred in College Station, Texas, where the top-seeded Texas A&M Aggies were unexpectedly knocked out by Liberty.
Liberty secured an 8-5 win against Texas A&M on Saturday, then battled through a second game, ultimately losing 14-11 in extra innings on Sunday, which set the stage for the decisive Game 7 in the College Station Regional. The series concluded with a narrow 6-5 victory for Liberty, highlighted by Rachel Loop’s impressive two home runs and four RBIs. This marked Loop’s fourth multi-homer game of the season, adding to her impressive total of 23 homers this year.
After the game, a somewhat overwhelmed Loop expressed her feelings, saying, “I’m just trying to handle everything. I got weight off my shoulders. We were fighting all day. It took us, I don’t know, a lot of time? 8 hours? We did whatever it took to get it done.”
Liberty’s triumph was historic for several reasons. Since the inception of national seeding in 2005, it marked the first time that a top overall seed was eliminated so early in the tournament. Additionally, this is the first time Liberty has advanced to the Super Regional Round. Following this remarkable loss, Texas A&M remains on the hunt for its first World Series appearance since 2017.
The Flames have been a strong team throughout the season, now boasting an overall record of 50-13, setting a new program record for victories. Liberty also ranks seventh nationally with a team ERA of 2.28.
This weekend, Liberty will travel to Eugene, Oregon, to face the 16th-seeded Oregon Ducks. There was speculation that Liberty might host a Super Regional, particularly after Stanford got pushed into the winner’s match against Oregon. Nevertheless, the Ducks clinched a dramatic 10-7 win on Sunday night with a walk-off hit from Digiana Patmon.
Other notable developments during the opening weekend included No. 10 LSU, which was eliminated on Saturday after two losses to Southeast Louisiana. The Huskers are set to compete against No. 7 Tennessee in the Supers.
In Durham, North Carolina, Georgia triumphed over Duke in the winner’s game, ending the Blue Devils’ three-year streak in the Super Regionals. The Bulldogs will face their rivals, Florida, in the Supers.
Additionally, Ole Miss emerged victorious in the region hosted by No. 13 Arizona, setting up a matchup with Arkansas in the Super Regionals.
Super Regional Play kicks off with games on Thursday night. Texas Tech will take on Florida in Tallahassee at 7 PM ET, followed by Clemson facing Texas at 9 PM in Austin.
