Major traffic jams expected as New York City’s Third Avenue Bridge gets suck

Photos show a New York City bridge became stuck open on Monday afternoon after overheating due to the summer heat.

The Third Avenue Bridge, which crosses the Harlem River and connects Manhattan to the Bronx, became stuck at about 2:46 p.m., when metal on the 126-year-old bridge overheated, causing it to expand, according to FOX 5 New York.

The New York City Fire Department confirmed the incident to Fox News Digital on Monday afternoon.

Aerial photos showed firefighters pumping water into the bridge to cool it down.

Temperatures in New York City on Monday reached 90 degrees Fahrenheit. The bridge opened in 1898.

The FDNY added that New York Police Department (NYPD) officers were on standby to direct traffic, and FOX 5 reported that the incident caused major traffic jams in the early evening.

Authorities say no injuries were reported from the incident.
