Major Wildfires in California; Southbound 5 Freeway near L.A. Closed

Massive wildfires raged across California this weekend, forcing the closure of southbound Interstate 5 just north of Los Angeles on Sunday.

An unusually wet spring has helped contain the fires so far, but recent heat and strong winds over the weekend have allowed the blazes to spread, fuelled by thick shrubs and vegetation that have built up over the past two wet winters.

A wildfire that broke out over the weekend in the mountains northwest of Los Angeles has quickly scorched more than 14,000 acres of grassland and scrub, and experts are warning that it could be a dangerous, long-lasting fire in the West.

The blaze, dubbed the Post Fire, broke out Saturday afternoon near Interstate 5 about 45 miles from Los Angeles, authorities said. The blaze forced the evacuation of about 1,200 people from Hungry Valley Campground, a state recreation area popular with off-road vehicles. Officials also closed nearby Pyramid Lake, a weekend destination for boaters.

As of Sunday afternoon, the fire was about 2% contained, making it the state’s largest wildfire so far this year, according to CalFire.

The post fire continues, Expanding According to Cal Fire, damage affected nearly 15,000 acres.

Wildfires also broke out in Sonoma County in Northern California. according to Bay Area Public Radio Station KQED:

The fast-spreading fire is moving through Sonoma County near the southeastern end of Lake Sonoma. Cal Fire Mandatory evacuations have been issued and efforts are underway to prevent the fire from spreading to homes near Bradford Mountain.

The name of the fire Point Fire — Beginning early Sunday afternoon and continuing for at least 900 Acres Around 8:30 p.m.

The National Weather Service also issued a red flag warning for parts of the North Bay from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday. The warning was in effect for higher elevation areas of Sonoma and Napa counties, as well as farther north and east, where wind gusts are expected to reach 30 mph.

Fire risk along the Southern California coast was reported as “low” as of Friday afternoon.
