Poll Shows Majority Disapprove of Trump’s University Stance

A recent survey indicates that many Americans are not on board with President Trump’s approach to university campuses. Specifically, 56% expressed disapproval of his efforts to reform higher education.

This comes in light of State Education Secretary Linda McMahon’s decision to withdraw funding from Harvard and Columbia University due to worries over anti-Semitism. Additionally, Defense Secretary Pete Hegses announced a $70 million funding cut affecting three universities.

The White House has created a list of requirements that various agencies must fulfill before federal funding can resume. However, new polling data indicates that only 40% of Americans support this White House initiative.

Many respondents believe universities play a crucial role in fostering new ideas and advancing medical and scientific research. A notable 63% of those surveyed think universities are making an important, positive impact in the technology sector, while 27% felt they hadn’t seen either positive or negative changes from universities, and 9% felt there was a negative impact.

Furthermore, 64% believe that higher education institutions contribute to advancing research, whereas 26% feel they have no notable contributions, and 9% consider their impact on research to be poor.

Interestingly, just 48% of Americans feel that universities enhance workforce quality. Meanwhile, 34% said these institutions have no effect on their careers, and 17% considered the impact to be minimal.

This AP-NORC poll involved 1,175 adults and was conducted from May 1 to May 5, with a margin of error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
