Majority in the US backs recognition of a Palestinian state, according to a survey

A recent report indicates that a significant portion of Americans supports the idea of the United States recognizing a Palestinian state, particularly in light of the fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas after a lengthy conflict in the Gaza Strip. This finding is part of a new Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Wednesday.

According to the survey, 59% of participants are in favor of U.S. recognition of Palestine, while 33% are against it. The rest of the respondents were either unsure or didn’t answer.

Support varies greatly by political affiliation, with 80% of Democrats backing the establishment of a Palestinian state under U.S. leadership, compared to just 41% of Republicans.

Among individuals not registered with any major political party, 58% support the U.S. recognizing a Palestinian state, while 28% disagree.

The poll also reveals that 51% of those surveyed believe that President Trump should receive praise if his peace efforts yield positive results. Among Republicans, this figure rises to 83%, but only 25% of Democrats feel the same way.

Historically, the U.S. has provided unwavering support to Israel during its conflict with Hamas, across both the Biden and Trump administrations, although some allies have voiced support for Palestinian statehood.

Last week, President Trump mentioned that “we need to take a look” at a possible two-state solution for Israel and Gaza. He noted, “A lot of people prefer the one-state solution. Some people favor the two-state solution. We’ll have to see where this goes. We’re not making any comments on it right now.”

On Wednesday, Vice President Vance traveled to Israel to ensure the continuation of the ceasefire, meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Vance indicated that discussions are underway about forming an international security force to oversee Gaza.

Reports from Israel suggest that the ceasefire faced challenges over the weekend when “terrorists” allegedly targeted Israeli military positions in Gaza’s Rafah district.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) released a statement asserting they would adhere to the ceasefire but would respond decisively to any infractions. “The IDF will maintain its commitment to the ceasefire agreement while reacting firmly to violations,” they stated, highlighting their vigilance.

In reference to the situation, President Trump cautioned Hamas against launching attacks during the ceasefire, describing the group as “very violent,” and indicating that the U.S. would respond swiftly and forcefully if hostilities resumed.

The Reuters/Ipsos poll was conducted from October 15 to 20, gathering opinions from 4,385 respondents, with a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
