A poll released Thursday found that a majority of Americans oppose unconditional aid to Ukraine and believe Ukraine cannot prevail over Russia.
Defense Priorities, a non-interventionist think tank, Consignment YouGov will poll Americans on the war between Ukraine and Russia, rising tensions between China and Taiwan, and Israel’s conflict with its neighbors.
The survey found that 80 percent of respondents believe the U.S. should either place conditions on aid to Ukraine (45 percent), reduce aid to Ukraine (14 percent), or not send aid to Ukraine at all (21 percent).
While 52% of respondents said they did not believe Ukraine could win a war with Russia, 48% still believed it was a possibility.
Forty-two percent of Americans believe a conflict lasting more than three years would end with ceasefire negotiations, 26% say trench warfare will continue and the conflict will likely stagnate or slow, 13% say the Russian military will collapse, 12% say the Ukrainian military will collapse, and 7% gave a different answer.
61% of respondents said the US has no strategy for a Ukraine-Russia war, while 39% said it does.
The Biden-Harris administration has yet to adopt a formal strategy for the protracted Ukraine-Russia conflict, but the Biden-Harris State Department told Rep. Warren Davidson (R-Ohio) that a victory for Ukraine is “essential.”
Forty-six percent of respondents said NATO countries should not send troops to Ukraine because it could be the catalyst for a direct conflict between NATO and Russia.
A majority of Americans, 47 percent, agree that the U.S. should not allow Ukraine to attack Russian territory with U.S.-supplied weapons because it “could escalate the war and lead to direct conflict between NATO and Russia.”
Defense Priorities commissioned the survey through YouGov, which polled 1,176 American adults.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said in early August that the foreign policy vision advocated by former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), was “nonsense.”
