Majority of Voters Back 10% Tariff on All Imports

A JL Partners and DailyMail.com poll recently found that a majority of voters support the U.S. imposing a 10% tariff on all imported goods, with the rise of former President Donald Trump This highlights the renewed popularity of tariffs.

President Trump often supports America First tariff policies.

  • “When a company comes in and disposes of their product in the United States, they should automatically pay a tax, say 10%,” President Trump said on Fox Business last year. “I like 10 percent for everyone.”
  • President Trump told CNBC in March: “When they’re being taken advantage of by other countries, I have complete faith in them economically.”

Opinion polls found significant support for 10% tariffs.

  • 24% strongly support
  • 30% tend to support
  • 11% tend to disagree
  • 6% strongly disagree
  • 22% neither
  • 60% don’t know

“Voters don’t care about the details of the economy. For them, it’s instinctual, and the general proposition is to protect America and impose tariffs when other countries don’t act fairly.” James Johnson of JL Partners told the Daily Mail.

poll sampled 1,000 likely voters from March 20th to 24th (with a margin of error of 3.1 times).

The issue of tariffs is one of the longest-running debates in US history. Tariffs generate revenue for the federal government and encourage domestic production in some industries by acting as a protective barrier against foreign competitors.

According to Douglas A. Irwin’s “Trade Policy in American Economic History,” the average tariff is increased It reached a maximum of 60 percent from 1790 to 1860, before dropping to 20 percent. From 1861 to 1933, the average tariff increased to 50 percent. Since 1934, the rise of an idea called “free trade” has lowered tariffs to an average of about 5%.

Free trade sidelined tariffs in policy discussions until 2016, when President Trump campaigned on an America First policy that protects American producers.

Some economists believe that “free trade” is a radical idea born to benefit the world’s elites.
