Malibu faces mandatory evacuations as Franklin Fire grows to more than 2,700 acres

Thousands of people in Southern California were under evacuation orders and warnings Tuesday as the Franklin Fire roared through the wealthy Malibu area and firefighters struggled to contain it.

The fire had burned more than 2,700 acres and remained 0 percent contained as of Tuesday afternoon.

More than 18,000 residents and about 8,100 homes and structures in the Malibu area are under threat, Los Angeles County officials said.

More than 2,000 people were forced to evacuate and another 6,000 were warned to prepare to evacuate, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Malone said.

Dick Van Dyke, who turns 99 on Friday, said he and his wife, Arlene Silver, evacuated their Malibu home to escape the fire.

“Arlene and I evacuated safely with the animals, but as we were leaving, Bobo ran away,” Van Dyke said of one of her cats, according to the Associated Press. “We pray that he is safe and that our community of Serra Retreat survives this terrible fire.”
