LOS ANGELES, California — A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Los Angeles just before 7:30 a.m. Thursday, with the epicenter in Malibu, a coastal area north of the city famous for its surfing.
The epicenter was about three miles due north of Point Dume, home to the famous Zuma Beach, popular among surfers.
The quake shook homes for a few seconds but did not appear to cause any major damage. When the magnitude 6.7 earthquake struck Northridge, it was apparently the strongest earthquake to hit Los Angeles County in the past 30 years.
Malibu too Experienced Thirty-five years ago, in 1989, a magnitude 5.2 earthquake occurred, causing damage but no fatalities.
Local residents received emergency alerts on their smartphones advising them to evacuate to avoid falling debris. The alert appeared to have been issued automatically, and there had been no reports of falling debris at the time the alert was received.
I was sitting at my desk when the earthquake hit, and it felt like the floor was slowly rising and falling.
