Mali Conflict Escalates

Johannesburg: Reports indicate that Russia’s mercenary unit, Afrika Korps, has faced a significant defeat in Mali against jihadists and local militias. Al-Qaeda-affiliated rebels and Tuareg militants have been launching deadly attacks across the country, particularly impacting Mali’s military leadership.

This situation may represent a critical moment for Russia’s standing in West Africa. In exchange for aid in combating rebels, it appears Russia has been extracting valuable resources, including gold, from Mali. Yet, recent events show that Russian mercenaries were compelled to abandon their base in Kidal, a northern city.

“This situation is a huge setback for Russia,” said Ulf Lessing, who leads the Konrad Adenauer Foundation’s Sahel program, as reported by the Associated Press. He added, “The mercenaries lacked intel on the attack, which left them unable to safeguard major urban areas. Their inability to distinguish between combatants and civilians only worsened the conflict.”

Further, video footage has surfaced showing what is alleged to be a fallen Russian soldier alongside a Russian military vehicle reportedly departing Kidal.

U.S. Evacuates Some Nigerian Embassy Staff Citing Security Concerns

On April 26, 2026, amidst ongoing violence, one could observe a column of black smoke rising over Bamako’s Africa Tower as Tuareg rebels and jihadist groups maintained their coordinated assaults on multiple locations, driving renewed combat in regions like Kita, Kidal, Gao, and Sevier. Meanwhile, an agreement purportedly allowed Russian forces supporting Mali to vacate Kidal, which the rebels claim is now fully under their control.

A Nigerian media outlet reported that in Kidal, the Afrika Korps found itself vastly outnumbered, with around 10,000 to 12,000 attackers challenging approximately 2,000 Russian mercenaries. In this context, the Malian government compensates Wagner approximately $10 million monthly for security services.

A Telegram post from a Russian blog indicated that Afrika Korps troops, along with Malian army personnel, had withdrawn from Kidal and evacuated injured soldiers and heavy weaponry. However, the situation remains complicated, as ongoing combat missions continue amid the turmoil.

A spokesman for the Tuareg-led Front for the Liberation of Azawad stated that a “white” agreement facilitated the Russian troops’ withdrawal. However, there has been no official confirmation from the Malian government or Russian officials.

Recent Attacks Highlight Ongoing Security Dangers

The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement about terrorist threats, noting that around 250 militants had targeted Bamako Senou International Airport and a nearby military base, although these attacks were repelled. Concerns were expressed over the potential implications for the broader region’s stability.

On Monday, Mali’s military government announced that two high-ranking officers, General Oumar Diarra and General Modibo Kone, sustained injuries during the skirmishes. The government also confirmed the death of Sadio Camara, a prominent figure linked to bringing Russian mercenaries to assist in ongoing conflicts.

The rebels in question are believed to be from Nusrat al-Islam, with aspirations to establish an Islamic caliphate governed by strict Sharia law.

“The United States strongly condemns the attacks in Mali,” a spokesperson stated, offering condolences to the victims while expressing support for Mali in tackling the ongoing violence.

The U.S. Embassy in Mali has advised American citizens to remain vigilant, shelter in place, and keep updated on local developments regarding security. Notably, reports surfaced on Monday indicating further retreats by Malian troops and Russian mercenaries from Tessit amid continuing rebel actions, although this has yet to be officially validated.
