Political Tension Rises in NYC Mayoral Debate

New York, New York – Zoran Mamdani, the Socialist Party candidate for mayor, created quite a stir on Thursday evening. He chose not to endorse Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul during a debate, despite her earlier support for him.

“I believe this is a decision best made after the general election,” Mamdani stated when asked about his non-endorsement while at the debate with former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.

Following the debate, he told reporters, “My main focus is on November. We’re just a few weeks from the election, and I’ve been campaigning for quite a while. That’s why I haven’t made an endorsement since last November.”

Mamdani’s statements caught many off guard, especially considering Hochul’s previous comments as she pressed for party unity ahead of the election.

“New York City deserves a mayor who will stand firm against Donald Trump and work towards making life more affordable for everyone,” Hochul had said in her endorsement. “I’m supporting @ZohranKMamdani.”

This unexpected move drew sharp reactions from Republicans and led to criticism on social media. Some believed Hochul’s backing of Mamdani might have been a strategic error.

Republican Representative Elise Stefanik, who is likely to challenge Hochul in the upcoming gubernatorial race, criticized Mamdani’s decision as “degrading and humiliating.”

Stefanik also mentioned, “Mamdani’s team has threatened to call for a primary election if Hochul doesn’t support him,” adding that Hochul quickly ceded to pressure, now campaigning on policies that many consider extreme.

She continued, “New Yorkers can see how politically weak Hochul is, and Mamdani confirmed that by his refusal to endorse her during the debate.” In a press release, she labeled Hochul as the debate’s “biggest loser,” seeing that none of the candidates had pledged their support for her.

The Republican National Committee also highlighted Mamdani’s refusal to endorse, noting the irony given Hochul’s earlier endorsement of him, punctuated with a clown emoji in their social media post.

Republican Representative Mike Lawler chimed in with laughter, stating that, “No one believes @GovKathyHochul should be re-elected.”

Fox News Digital has reached out to Hochul’s campaign for further comment.
