Migrants’ Rights Video Sparks Controversy in NYC
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has stirred significant controversy following the release of a social media video where he offers guidance in Spanish on how individuals should respond to federal immigration officials. The video was posted on Friday and features the mayor discussing rights during interactions with ICE.
“If you encounter ICE, these are your rights,” Mamdani opens in Spanish, kicking off a minute-and-a-half-long clip. He explains that ICE agents cannot enter private property without a judicial order, emphasizing the importance of looking for phrases like “United States District Court” along with a judge’s signature on any documents presented.
Interestingly, he even advises viewers to request that ICE agents “pass the order under the door.” It’s a somewhat unusual suggestion, but, well, it reflects his stance on protecting individual rights.
Mamdani continues by asserting that individuals approached by ICE on the street have the right to remain silent. He encourages them to ask, “Am I free to go?” and warns against signing any documents without first consulting a lawyer. He wraps up the video by sharing a hotline for legal support and reaffirming that New Yorkers have the right to protest, promising to defend that right.
However, the video faced sharp criticism from Republican lawmakers and conservative groups on social media. Senator Mike Lee from Utah pointedly remarked that the video fails to encourage adherence to U.S. laws, claiming it wasn’t made for the benefit of American citizens.
Tom Fitton, the president of Judicial Watch, labeled the video a “dangerous incitement,” expressing concern that it could endanger lives. He voiced his disapproval on social media, framing the clip as filled with misleading information.
Senator Rick Scott from Florida found the content “unbelievable,” accusing Mamdani of openly assisting undocumented immigrants in avoiding ICE and undermining the law. He expressed frustration over what he views as the radical Democratic agenda, which he feels contributes to a crisis at the border.
Rep. Nick LaLota from New York also criticized the mayor’s actions, stating that Mamdani used taxpayer resources to instruct undocumented individuals in Spanish on how to escape legal accountability. LaLota further connected these policies to what he perceives as a growing similarity between New York City and Paris, suggesting that liberal immigration policies are to blame.
Finally, Senator Bernie Moreno from Ohio didn’t mince words with his response, calling the video “treason.” The overarching reaction suggests that Mamdani’s video has undeniably sparked intense discussions about immigration policy and the responsibilities of public officials.
