Unlikely Alliance: Trump and Mayor Mamdani Correspond Regularly
It seems that Mayor Zoran Mamdani and President Trump have developed a rather “friendly” correspondence, exchanging letters at least twice a week. This is quite a development, especially considering their contrasting political views, with Mamdani being a socialist and Trump representing conservative ideals.
Reports indicate that the former congressman from Astoria and Queens has been communicating fairly regularly with Trump through text messages since their meeting at the White House last November. They’ve covered a variety of topics, from strategizing about Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro to discussing real estate issues in New York City.
Sources familiar with their exchanges describe the tone as notably “friendly.” One political insider pointed out that it’s not practical for them to engage in conflict, either publicly or privately. However, there’s a suggestion that they aren’t entirely at ease with one another.
One insider advised, “Mamdani should maintain a friendly demeanor with Trump, especially given that the federal government holds potential financial power over the city.” They noted that billions of dollars could be at stake.
The evolution of their relationship stands in stark contrast to the interactions between previous presidents and New York mayors. Even Mamdani’s predecessor, Eric Adams, sought to connect with Trump but often needed intermediaries to reach him.
In this context, Andrew Kurtzman, CEO of a strategic communications firm, mentioned how unusual it is for Trump to feel so comfortable with a sitting mayor. He noted, “It’s interesting how Mamdani has become a focal point for Trump, especially after his not-so-great relationship with the last left-leaning mayor, Bill de Blasio.” This suggests that the current dynamics might surprise Mamdani himself.
When discussing the potential impact of this relationship on Mamdani’s base, particularly the Democratic Socialists of America who generally oppose the Republican administration, Kurtzman expressed that they might understand the pragmatic nature of Mamdani’s approach. “From Mamdani’s perspective, this is purely transactional,” he stated, suggesting that the left might be willing to overlook certain alignments given the circumstances.
