Mayoral and Congressional Responses to Trump’s Airstrikes
New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani, along with Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ilhan Omar, has strongly criticized President Trump’s recent airstrikes against Iran in collaboration with Israel. Their condemnations highlight a broader discontent among many left-leaning politicians.
Mamdani referred to the military actions as a significant and harmful escalation of what he calls an illegal war of aggression. It’s interesting, considering just days prior, he had shared a moment with Trump discussing potential housing projects in New York during a visit to the White House.
“Bombing cities and killing civilians, that’s not what Americans want. They’re weary of regime change wars. They want relief from the constant price hikes. They want peace,” Mamdani stated, emphasizing the public sentiment against further conflict.
The Mayor reassured New Yorkers that his priority remains their safety, noting that he has been actively coordinating with Police Chief Jessica Tisch and emergency management teams. He mentioned steps being taken, like increasing patrols in sensitive areas to ensure community safety.
“To Iranian New Yorkers: You’re integral to our city’s fabric. You are small business owners, artists, students, and community leaders. You are safe here,” Mamdani continued, recognizing the contributions of Iranian residents to the city.
Meanwhile, Ocasio-Cortez expressed her frustration with Trump, claiming that he is pulling Americans into a conflict they don’t want. She argued that the airstrikes lack a clear purpose and voiced concerns about the potential long-term consequences of these military actions.
“This war is illegal, unnecessary, and will end badly,” she asserted with intensity.
Rep. Omar echoed these sentiments, asserting that Trump has unilaterally involved the country in an unjust war against Iran, bypassing Congress and lacking a clear purpose or imminent threat to the United States.
