Mamdani continues to view Trump as a 'fascist' following White House meeting

Mamdani Stands Firm on Views Post-Meeting with Trump

New York City’s incoming mayor, Zoran Mamdani, reaffirmed his belief that Donald Trump is a “fascist” during an interview on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, following a meeting at the White House the previous Friday.

“That’s what I’ve said in the past and I’ll say it today,” he stated when prompted by host Kristen Welker regarding his stance on Trump.

During the interview, Welker questioned Mamdani about his recent high-profile encounter with Trump in the Oval Office. Fox News correspondent Jackie Heinrich specifically raised the topic of whether he still perceived Trump as a “fascist.”

Mamdani began to elaborate but was interrupted by Trump, who encouraged him to keep it simple, remarking, “Just say yes. It’s easier than explaining. I don’t care.”

When asked if he still viewed Trump as a “threat to democracy,” Mamdani replied, “Everything I have ever said, I still believe,” demonstrating a clear consistency in his views.

Mamdani indicated that while their discussions may reveal significant divergences, it’s crucial to recognize the common ground that can lead to productive dialogue. He expressed appreciation for Trump’s willingness to address the pressing issues faced by New Yorkers, such as the affordability crisis, while being candid about their disagreements.

The meeting focused on critical topics including affordability, housing, and public safety, coming on the heels of Mamdani’s solid victory in the recent mayoral election.

On the matter of public safety, Mamdani emphasized his intention to retain the NYPD’s forces, which number around 35,000 officers. However, he also plans to reroute more non-emergency situations to mental health responders, suggesting a shift in how the city will approach public safety initiatives.
