Mamdani criticizes Adams over 'bag of chips' controversy: 'Absurd'

New York City Mayoral Race Heats Up Amid Allegations

Zohran Mamdani, a candidate for mayor in New York City, has found himself scrutinizing the current mayor, Eric Adams, following a recent incident involving an aide and some cash. This situation has generated quite a bit of buzz within the local media.

Mamdani pointed out that the allegations swirling around the campaign seem, well, far-fetched. He remarked that some claims felt less like serious accusations and more like distractions. “Cash being hidden in envelopes inside a bag of tips for reporters? That’s just odd,” he commented.

When asked who he views as his main competitor in this race, Mamdani didn’t hesitate. He talked about the overall disillusionment among New Yorkers regarding the political scene. “Honestly, it’s the disappointment and hopelessness that voters feel about politics that I fear the most,” he said. “Can you blame them? If you witness this kind of thing every day, it’s hard to believe in local government’s promises.”

Mamdani is competing against both Mayor Adams and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, but he’s running as an independent, which is notable considering that both Adams and Cuomo have previously identified as Democrats.

A recent report detailed an event in Harlem where aides from Adams’ campaign allegedly attempted to give money to a reporter. This money was reportedly handed over by Winnie Greco, a long-time adviser to Adams, and was concealed in a bag of potato chips. In response to the incident, Todd Shapiro, a spokesperson for Adams’ campaign, mentioned that Greco had been suspended from her volunteer duties.

“We were taken aback by these allegations,” Shapiro stated. “Winnie Greco has been suspended from any campaign-related activities.”

Meanwhile, Greco’s attorney, Stephen Brill, defended her actions, suggesting there was no malice involved. “Sure, it might look odd at first glance,” he said, “but Winnie’s intentions were totally innocent. In many cultures, including Chinese, gifting money can symbolize friendship and gratitude.”

Further comments were sought from both Adams’ campaign and Brill regarding the evolving situation.
